I can't answer the question about whether or not the oil pan has to be removed to do the rear main. I know the trans has to be pulled, so I really wouldn't think so. However, the rear main seal isn't really known for leaking. The oil pan gasket is known to leak though, and make it appear to be the rear main seal.
